Spring storm season garage door prep for Mount Juliet

When severe weather hits Wilson County, the garage door is the most vulnerable part of the house. A failed door lets wind pressurize the home from inside, which is how roofs come off. March through May is the time to get yours ready.

The National Weather Service marks March, April, and May as the peak of severe weather and tornado season in Tennessee. Straight-line winds do most of the damage in most years, and the garage door, the largest single opening in the house, is where wind finds its way in. A door that buckles lets wind pressurize the home from inside, which is how roofs come off. Late winter is the time to get yours ready.

Why the garage door is the weak point

A typical residential double door is 16 feet of lightly braced surface. Wind load across that area is enormous, and once the door fails, wind entering the garage pressurizes the interior of the house. That internal pressure pushes up on the roof from inside, multiplying the structural damage far beyond the door itself.

Older doors, damaged doors, loose tracks, and missing hardware fail first. If your door flexes visibly in strong wind, rattles in its tracks, or has bent sections, it is telling you it is the weak point before the storm does.

What reinforcement actually helps

Reinforcement is about stiffness and anchoring. Horizontal struts across the door sections resist bowing, L-brackets and vertical braces tie the door into stronger framing, and solidly anchored tracks keep the whole assembly where it belongs.

On a storm-prep visit we inspect and tighten every track bracket and jamb fastener, add struts where the door flexes, and verify the tracks are anchored to solid framing rather than just trim. An honest note: reinforcement meaningfully strengthens the door you have, but it does not turn a light residential door into a rated storm door. We will tell you which side of that line your door is on.

Wind-rated doors: an honest explanation

Wind-rated, or wind-load rated, doors are built and tested to withstand higher wind pressures than standard doors. The difference is physical: heavier-gauge steel, additional struts, reinforced track systems, and stronger hardware throughout. There is simply more door in the door.

They cost more than a standard replacement for the same reason: more material, more hardware, more labor. We never quote a number without an on-site look, because the door size, construction, and track work all change the job. If your door is old, damaged, or flexes in strong wind, a wind-rated replacement is worth discussing before storm season, not after. See garage door installation.

Your pre-storm checklist

Do this in February, before the March start of peak season:

  • Tighten everything. Hinge bolts, track brackets, and the opener mount. Winter's temperature swings loosen hardware.
  • Check the tracks. Confirm they are anchored solidly to the jambs and look for bent sections. See track repair.
  • Test the safety systems. Photo-eyes and auto-reverse, so the door behaves after power flickers and debris.
  • Test the emergency release. If a storm knocks out power, you need the car out. Know where the red cord is and confirm the door lifts by hand.
  • Review tornado safety. The National Weather Service tornado safety guidance covers where to shelter and how to prepare. Your garage is not a shelter; your plan should say where you go instead.

After the storm: what to check

Before you run the opener after a storm, look at the door. Check for bent tracks, frayed cables, cracked panels, and a door sitting crooked in its opening. If anything looks damaged, do not operate the door. A damaged door under spring tension can move unexpectedly and turn a small repair into a big one.

Dented panels from debris do not always mean a new door. One or two damaged sections can often be replaced on their own, as long as the style is still available. We handle post-storm emergency garage door service across Stonehollow, Hickory Hills, and the rest of Mount Juliet.

Common Questions

Why are garage doors so vulnerable in high winds?
A standard double garage door is 16 feet of lightly braced surface, the largest opening in the house. Wind load across that area can buckle the door, and once it fails, wind pressurizes the home's interior, which multiplies structural damage.
When is storm season in Middle Tennessee?
March, April, and May are the peak months for severe weather and tornadoes in Tennessee, according to the National Weather Service. Straight-line winds cause damage in most events, so prepare before March.
Can my existing garage door be reinforced for storms?
Often, yes. Added horizontal struts, L-brackets, and properly anchored tracks make a real difference. Reinforcement strengthens the door you have; it does not make it equal to a purpose-built wind-rated door, and a technician can tell you which makes sense for yours.
What is a wind-rated garage door?
A door built and tested to withstand higher wind pressures, using heavier-gauge steel, additional struts, and reinforced tracks and hardware. It costs more than a standard door because of the extra material and labor, with exact pricing confirmed after an on-site look.
What should I check on my garage door after a storm?
Before running the opener, look for bent tracks, frayed cables, cracked panels, or a door sitting crooked. If anything looks damaged, do not operate the door; call for service. Running a damaged door can turn a small repair into a big one.
